The
Doctor and his friends find themselves in the future on a planet run like
a gigantic holiday camp. A man called Medok tells the Doctor that
the Earth colony is being secretly infiltrated at night by crab-like creatures
called Macra. The Macra are in fact in control of this 'paradise' and
while the colony sleep, the Macra absorb the planet's natural gases deep
underground, which resemble the gases on their own planet.; They condition
the colonists to work for them, refining the deadly gases that the
Macra need to survive, and to ignore their presence - they even managed
to stop the colonists seeing the murder of their own controller.
The conditioning fails on some colonists, and the Doctor takes control
of the gas-pumping machine and manages to cut of the Macra's vital supply
of the gases. Ben clinches the victory and frees the colony by blowing
up the gas pumps, freeing the colony from domination by the Macra.
