Answering a mayday call, the Doctor and Sarah arrive on Zeta Minor, a planet far out on the edge of the known Universe. A geological expedition from the planet Morestra has 'run into trouble. Planet Of Evil was one of several Doctor Who stories directly inspired by script editor Robert Holmes' love of gothic fiction -- in this case, Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde.
Designer Roger Murray-Leach designed a detailed, exotic alien jungle set. This proved so successful that it was extensively photographed by the BBC Educational Service, which would use it as an example of excellent set design for years afterward.

All four episodes exist in color on videotape.
